Finally got around to looking for some info on David's absence from the the show on Fridays. Bummer. The people they are using for his segment now are OK I guess, but I really doubt I will ever find myself in a "driveway moment" waiting for them to finish the segment.
03/23/2009
What a sad note that David is gone! I had to google him to find out why is is no longer with the program. William Bosch (see 2/20/09 comment) you are woefully mistaken. Marketplace, bring David back.
From St. Paul, MN, 02/20/2009
As a lifelong contrarian, I am pleased to see Mr. Johnson's 'false optimism' banter no longer getting airtime on Marketplace. I was always irritated by his used car salesman approach. You know how it goes: no vehicle is bad; some are simply more valuable than others. Johnson only appeared to be knowledgeable because he was riding the wave of a 40-year-old, debt-fueled economic bubble. Now that the inevitable reckoning is here, we find that the emperor had no clothes -- and neither did Mr Johnson. Or as Warren Buffett likes to say: "It's only when the tide goes out that you learn who's been swimming naked."
From Phoenix, AZ, 10/25/2008
I've been missing David the Dallas stockbroker on Fridays...finally took time today to look up and so disappointed to find out he is gone. What a BIG loss for Marketplace. I always try to make sure listening on Fridays...now won't bother.
From Houston, TX, 10/20/2008
I always made sure to start my Friday commute home at the same time that Marketplace came on the air so that I could listen to David Johnson on my car radio. While the program is still good, it's just not the same. I miss you, David.
From New York, NY, 10/20/2008
Here, a month later, I thought it was just me missing something- so sad, I always loved listening to Mr. Johnson and his insightful and comedic comments that were the perfect ending to a week, no matter the outcome. Hope it was a mutually beneficial decision, best of luck, sir.
10/14/2008
Im so upset about the loss of David. i used to break out into a scream of joy every time one friday. my favorite time of the week. good luck david, our loss
From Rockville, MD, 10/12/2008
David Johnson's incredibly abrupt and completely unexplained departure from Marketplace screams CONTRACT DISPUTE. Either Mr. Johnson asked for more money than NPR was willing to pay or NPR just went through another round of budget-cutting OR Mr. Johnson got another gig.
In any case, this is a HUGE loss to this show. Many Fridays I would make a special point to listen to the show just to hear David Johnson's segment. No more.
From TX, 10/11/2008
What a big loss. David was the closer for the greatest business program. He made the bad good and the good great in wall street. I'm one of those that is ralling for his return. It took me a very long time to get used to Kai after D.Broncacio. Hope this was his choice and not Marketplace.
From midland, MI, 10/10/2008
Something has been missing from the friday evening show for the last few weeks. tonight i finally visited the website and found the answer. On aug 29th i was sitting on the Elberta beach watching the sun set over lake michigan and missed the show. thanks to david for the many laughs over the years. god bless.
From Sonoma, CA, 10/03/2008
He must have seen the writing on the wall and now the market has gone to far south for even David to be positive about. Good luck amigo.
From Brooklyn, NY, 10/03/2008
I'm another one who just realized David Johnson officially left the show, and I too am bummed. I thought I'd just been missing him but wow. His analysis was great - clear, insightful, and delivered with just the right amount of humor. I really enjoyed him and learned a great from each commentary. Thanks for a great run, and I will definitely try to track him down.
From MA, 10/03/2008
I just realized that David Johnson is no longer on Marketplace - I am so disappointed!
From traverse city, MI, 10/03/2008
i miss the eternal optimist.
From Baton rouge, LA, 09/26/2008
I finally realized that I missed Johnson's swan song in real time. Now having pulled it from your archive, I am 'bummed out'. I don't know the reason, but the only valid excuse would be that Johnson had died! The program is missing something. I haven't felt this bad about public radio since NPR canned Bob Edwards (and I will never forgive NPR for that). Cheers! But bring Johnson back, pronto!!!
From Dallas, 09/22/2008
I haven't been this disappointed since we lost Tim Russert. Godspeed, Mr. Johnson. I hope you are well. My drive home on Fridays will be less enlightened.
From Fairfax, VA, 09/21/2008
It seems as though many people share my sense of disappointment that I won't be listening to David Johnson on Marketplace anymore. (It took me a couple of weeks to figure out what was going on.) Bob Moon is off to a great start, though. I'll probably still time my Friday departures from work to make sure I'm in the car when the weekly Wall Street review is on.
From Fayetteville, TN, 09/19/2008
Really going to miss the comments with the middle America perspective away from the coasts.
You had been around long enough to remember the last financial crisis, that so many reporters and commentators are now missing.
Thanks for a lot of great Friday comments.
From geneva, IL, 09/14/2008
David Johnson's market insight was the best way to start a weekend. I always looked forward to his commentary and became a regular listener, particularly on Fridays. Another person who knows what he is talking about is now off NPR.
From SC, 09/11/2008
I will definitely miss hearing him on Marketplace. I wont miss hearing Kai Rysdall act like he was a pollyanna anytime the market looks good. I would think that if O is elected, Kai will stop harping on how BAD THE ECONOMY IS!
From Allentown, PA, 09/09/2008
I listened to the 9/5 show, missed David's segment, then visited here to find out last week was his last segment. Very, very sorry to see David go -- I would rarely miss a Friday edition because I admired David's wisdom, wit, and perspective. David, this listener will go looking for you on KRLD (thank God for streaming audio) and I would, carte blanche, donate towards any public radio programming venture that you were to get involved with. Best wishes in your future endeavors!
From Sunnyvale, CA, 09/08/2008
Here it is ten days after David's last broadcast, and I find I have to express my appreciation for David. How I have looked forward to hearing him over the last 18 years.
From Huntington Beach, CA, 09/08/2008
I will really miss "the voice of reason" on Friday afternoons, especially after those weeks that the markets dole out their beatings. David's wit and humor will be missed.
Thanks David, its been some ride!
From Ellington, CT, 09/07/2008
I will miss the Friday drive home waiting for David Johnson's comments on the week that was on Wall st. Real Bummer. Good Luck to you David.
From Red Wing, MN, 09/05/2008
Where was Mr. Johnson? I went to listen today & no week on wall street? He was one of the primary reasons I listened - I realize everything comes to an end but why him, why now? His commentary still seemed vital & interesting 19 years after his first airing.
You have a hole to fill - I suggest you get after the task of filling it.
Wish Mr. Johnson my best.
From Quincy, FL, 09/05/2008
There is no resason to listen to Marketplace on Friday afternoons. Your show is just any other business voice with nothing to make you different. Ditching David Johnson is a loss to your show and big empty hole on Friday afternoons...sad for America.
From Boothwyn, PA, 09/05/2008
Mr Johnson you will be missed. I would always be sure to catch Fridays show just for your insights. I hope you will come back in some form on some show in the future. Marketplace's loss.
From Audubon, PA, 09/04/2008
Say it isn't so!!! I want a recount! A recall! An instant replay! Arrrgh! David, you will be missed. Thank you. - Martin
From Orlando, FL, 09/04/2008
I have looked forward to hearing from "the stockbroker down in Dallas". He was always humorous and upbeat even in a down market. Fridays will not be the same. Best wishes Mr. Johnson.
From Polacca, AB, 09/04/2008
What a hammer blow. I thought you guys were actually kidding when you made the announcement. I've listened and looked forward to David's commentaries for the last 10 years and have found that he offers the most sane voice of any pundit out there. With his eagle's eye view and eye to the long term, he's helped us move forward through good times and bad. His perspective will be missed deeply as we long for his return. :-)
From Rockford, IL, 09/04/2008
David Johnson: You're commentary brought a light to an otherwise dark market. I've been listening for years, and consider marketplace my favorite radio show. Your appearances on the show reflect a large reason why. You will be sorely missed.
Does anyone know if David maintains a blog somewhere? I would love to add that to my favorites.
From Davie, FL, 09/03/2008
I'm with Peter from Winter Park... I haven't felt this bad since Louis Rukeyser (RIP) left his program. I hope this was David's choice & not Marketplace's. Either way I'll be much less likely to listen in on Friday evenings...
From Purcellville, VA, 09/03/2008
David Johnson, you will be greatly missed--Fridays will just not be the same. Might you consider an occassional perspective on the markets to lighten and inform us?
I would also welcome an additional piece from Marketplace given us a retrospective on David's long association with the program.
From Houston, TX, 09/02/2008
I was so sad to learn that David Johnson will be leaving Marketplace. Please accept this message from a listener in Houston: Best Wishes to the stockbroker in Dallas.
From Apopka, FL, 09/02/2008
David Johnson's departure was a hit out of left field. I ALWAYS enjoyed his perspective on the market and looked forward to hearing every Friday and truly missed his segments when he took those much deserve vacations. That said, Marketplace could have given us a little warning (if they could, although t was NOT addressed) but the BIGGEST problem is how does a 3:00 piece for someone who has been there from the beginning justify the contribution he made. It would have been nice to hear a longer segment on the show or one that aired on Marketplace Money (ever heard of cross promotion?) really walking down memory lane with David. He will be missed but we do deserve at least some explanation.
From San Diego, CA, 09/02/2008
Like so many other listeners, I too relished the Friday afternoon Marketplace segments because of David Johnson. Whatever the reason, he will be sorely missed and I echo Gerard's comment that hopefully David will be brought back from time to time for his unique and humorous perspectives. Thank you, David, for making Marketplace on Friday's Must Listen To Radio. Friday will never be the same.
From Los Angeles, CA, 09/02/2008
David:
You will be missed. Your segment was always one of my favorites. It would have been nice to have a little warning. Take care and hopefully we will hear you somewhere soon.
From Astoria, NY, 09/02/2008
I would rearrange my schedule so as to not miss David Johnson, the stockbroker from Dallas, sum up the week with verve & metaphor. When I heard last Friday would be his last on Marketplace, I was surprised at the sadness I felt, like losing an old friend.
From CO, 09/02/2008
David we'll miss you. This has been one of my favorite portions of Marketplace for the 4 years I've been listening. Good luck in everything you do...
From Champaign, IL, 09/02/2008
This is really upsetting - I have to echo the comments of other listeners in BEGGING David to at least come back as a commentator if not back in his traditional role!
David Johnson, please! Every Friday, I always wished we had at least twice as much time of you chatting with Kai. I still remember somewhat recently (a few months ago?) when you finished up your segment with an uncharacteristic monologue - it was great! You would be wonderful as a commentator and your talents are desperately needed.
:'o( I can't imagine that any Marketplace listener will think less of you if you reconsider, David. Some might even ignore their poor student status and start donating to public radio... (*wink wink nudge nudge*)
I think I echo the comments of everyone below in saying that listeners really do NOT want to wait until the next scheduled "Letters" segment to hear what happened. Please give us SOMETHING... at least a note on the website?
David, I'm a New Mexican native, and as you might be aware, stepping foot in Texas makes our blood crystallize and kills us slowly, but it would be worth it to get to hear The Man Down in Dallas once more.
From Champaign, IL, 09/02/2008

From Willits, CA, 09/01/2008
Is it asking too much to share with us WHY David Johnson is leaving? We've listened to him since the inception of Marketplace and Fridays just won't be the same without David's jocular repartee. Is he retiring? Is he well? Is Marketplace in financial trouble? Is david under indictment? Inquiring minds care and want to know. Please don't keep us in the dark!
(And for that matter, whatever happened to Amanda Greenleaf Whelan, "a waitress from Nashville"? Shortly after she moved to LA, she vanished from Marketplace, too.)
09/01/2008
A real gentleman; I will miss him, too.
From Mesa, AZ, 09/01/2008
This can't be happening! I've always looked forward to David's weekly analysis of Wall Sreet! I love the way he is always upbeat, but hints at dark clouds brewing on the horizon. I always feel as though he knows more than he is willing to tell. Which makes it really interesting! Good Luck David! You will be missed!
From Aurora, CO, 09/01/2008
David Johnson will be sorely missed. I really appreciated his positive outlook and his interaction with Kai made for one of the best conversations radio has to offer. Best of luck in your future endeavors, David.
From NYC, NY, 09/01/2008
My Fridays won't be the same. All the best. Hope we can listen to you again in the future perhaps on another program or through another medium.
From chapel hill, NC, 08/31/2008
All good things come to an end. Bon voyage.
From spring, TX, 08/31/2008
Does this mean that he is giving up and that the market is really dead?
08/31/2008
What? David Johnson is leaving? I'm in shock. I looked forward every week to the witty, unscripted, laugh-out-loud chat between Kai and David. David Johnson would give me the will to live after all the depressing reports on our economy that I would listen to all week (not always from Marketplace). Why? Why? Please don't end this with one last chat. David deserves more. (Oh, where is the kleenex box when you need it?)
From Tucson, AZ, 08/30/2008
I didn't always think that David Johnson was the cats meow, like some. But, I gave him my ear like I do others in the field. Sometimes I thought he had very little depth, but given the time he had, what could he say.
However, the lack of any explanation and the abrupt news truly has me wondering. And I've lost respect for the show for not giving an explanation. We are an educated, mature (not age related) audience with the ability to understand things. You have underestimated us by you're obvious silence, as well as not given us due respect.
From Eatonton, GA, 08/30/2008
There was really no explanation of why we will no longer have the pleasure of hearing David Johnson every Friday driving home from work. He was the best part of your Friday show. I am sure I am not the only one who would like to know more.
From Winter Par, FL, 08/30/2008
I've been listening to David Johnson for a long time. I lived in Dallas in the 80's when he reported on KRDL and KERA.
I will miss driving home on Friday and listening to David's positive perspective. We lost Louis Ruekeyser a few years ago, now David's off the air. It's not going to be the same.
From Chicago, IL, 08/30/2008
I am bereft! If I'd known he was retiring, I would have tried to listen even more, never miss a Friday, even for cocktails. Best wishes, David Johnson. I will probably love you until I die.
From rutherford, NJ, 08/30/2008
Like the other listeners I will miss David Johnsons Friday report. Even though I listen to Bloomberg radio all day long I still liked to hear his take on the market for that week. His report would have been even more insightful if Kai had just kept his ego in check and his mouth shut and stopped interrupting him.
From Medford, NY, 08/30/2008
There are a lot of reasons to look forward to Friday, and David Johnson was always one of them. Best of luck, you will be missed.
From longmeadow, MA, 08/30/2008
Thank you David Johnson for all the years you entertained and educated me. I never missed a single episode.
From Austin, TX, 08/30/2008
David, David, David! We had Alan Greenspan for 19 years and have learned to get along without him, but not YOU! For one thing, I could always point to you as a Texas we all can love! Even from Dallas! We will still be able to hear your unique voice in the Marketplace archives, but Fridays will never be the same. Like many of your devastated fans, I made it a point to tune in on Fridays, timed the commute to hear you in the car, or logged on later for the replay. By your email (davidjohnson@cbs.com) I am hoping you will continue to populate the airwaves with intelligence. thanks for so many years with Kai & gang.
Good night and good luck!
Dianne from Austin
From delaware, OH, 08/30/2008
Where is he going and why is he leaving? Since he was an important part of Marketplace, some questions raised by listeners must be answered.
From Boston, MA, 08/30/2008
This is a catastrophe!
For me, the most important show on NPR is Marketplace, and the most important part of Marketplace is David Johnson’s insights on Friday.
I never miss the Friday numbers.
This is really sad.
From Berkeley, CA, 08/30/2008
Very disappointing! Not much to add to the above comments, though interesting to find I wasn't the only one who found Johnson's Friday riff on the economy & markets to be a highlight worth adjusting my schedule to hear. Whoever decided this, I hope Marketplace or Mr. Johnson himself will reconsider, though given public radio management's response when listeners raised a ruckus with the expulsion of Bob Edwards, not likely this one can be changed either I suppose. What to me was the highlight of Marketplace is going missing.
From Tucson, AZ, 08/29/2008
I know almost nothing about finance but I have always looked forward to Friday's show for that five(?) minutes with David Johnson. I guess I liked that Wall Street could be discussed so affably by a smart guy. Maybe he's getting his own show. I wish good things for you David. You will be missed.
From Portland, OR, 08/29/2008
David, best wishes and good luck with your next adventure. Please come back to market place, or public radio, soon! If you are still on the air somewhere else, where can we find you?
There's no place in the market without you!
Larry Hurst
From Bellingham, WA, 08/29/2008
Wow... What a disappointment. My family knows that Friday's Marketplace has David and I need a few minutes of quiet while he's on. I usually try to time my very short commute home to catch the middle of Marketplace on Friday to hear David.
And my first thought was that since we didn't hear why or where he's going, it's probably bad news rather that good.
I must admin Marketplace has been very good over the years in replacing departing personalities, but there are some big shoes to fill in replacing David Johnson. I'm thinkin' my Fridays aren't going to be the same.
Well, as Kai said every Friday...
Thaaaaank You David!!!
From Jersey City, NJ, 08/29/2008
Say it ain't so. I am out of words, shocked to say the least, Friday evenings will never be the same. My daughter and I will miss you David, the guy down in Dallas. Well, I think I have to let go. Good luck and best wishes. Thank you so much for the wonderful time we spent listing to you.
Kai, we need to talk! How could you!
Aladdin
From Baytown, TX, 08/29/2008
We always delayed, for a few moments, our arrival at our favorite Friday evening restaurant in order to hear David's consistent light hearted take on what is sometimes a dismal subject. I just don't know what to add to all these comments. Adults learn to deal with disappointing losses, but it's never pleasant. We loved this segment of Marketplace.
From Yorktown, NY, 08/29/2008
While Kai and David both kept the final episode of David’s weekly spot professional and friendly, things can’t be good. For if they were, we would have been told all the wonderful details of whom, what and why. Was it politics, money, or ego? The fact that “they” chose to say nothing, leads many of us to think the worst. It’s ironic that a business show that so effectively takes big and complex issues and brings them down to a personal level, coldly reminds us that in an open and free economy, people are simply a commodity. For better or worse, that’s the way it is. Both Kai and David are great talents, and I’ve no doubt they each will continue to do well apart. But together their sum equaled more than their parts. And David’s departure means Fridays will never be the same.
Peace - John
From NY, NY, 08/29/2008
What humor, joy and wit you brought to every Friday on Marketplace. Best of luck. You will be missed.
From Pittsburgh, PA, 08/29/2008
Since you're in the business of explaining, could you start with your own? Would you tell us why? David and Kai were both very friendly and professional about it, but the lack of discussion about why seems totally contrary.
From Scottsdale, AZ, 08/29/2008
Your take on the week was something that I never missed ever since I discovered marketplace. It was one of the reasons that I looked forward to every friday. Thank you for giving us hope when the going was tough, cautioning us when we were euphoric and enlightening us when we were confused.
From Las Vegas, NV, 08/29/2008
David Johnson, I will miss your lighthearted commentary on the markets. Thank you for bringing a smile to my face on Fridays. YOU WILL BE MISSED!
From ann arbor, MI, 08/29/2008
The light at the end of the work-week tunnel, the best minutes on public radio, the joy and positive energy he projects over the airwaves - all will be missed more than David Johnson knows.
08/29/2008
David Johnson has been the financial highlight of my week for several years. I actually plan to be near a radio to be able to hear him on Friday evenings. David's style reminds me of Louis Rukeyser, whom I long admired before his departure and death. While David will be sorely missed, I wish him well.
From La Luz, NM, 08/29/2008
It is like a passing flame to hear David is leaving. I hope he can be a guest commentator in the future. I thought Friday and David were fused in my head as a time and place for me to listen to Marketplace. I hope some sort of resolution can be announced as to where David's future may lie. All the best David.
From League City, TX, 08/29/2008
Too bad, so sad - it's been great listening to some good common sense commentary. Good luck, good fortune, and much enjoyment in your future endeavors.
From Saint Paul, MN, 08/29/2008
Dang. David started around the time I came to the country and I've been listening ever since. Is this Retirement? Hopefully not someone in NPR who thought it wasn't worth doing... Thanks for all your wisdom, David.
From Chugiak, AK, 08/29/2008
I could hardly believe my ears when I heard David Johnson's last day was TODAY on Marketplace--without even a hint of his departure before now! I truly looked forward to each Friday edition of this terrific show just to hear him give his humorous and insightful view of the market. Even if someone else takes his 'spot', he can't be replaced. Thanks, David. You'll be missed.
From Kansas City, MO, 08/29/2008
Sad news indeed. Mr. Johnson's weekly piece was a highlight of my week's end, and he will be missed. Happy trails, Mr. J.
From Mechanicsburg, PA, 08/29/2008
I'm so sorry to hear that David Johnson is leaving Marketplace. I've listened to him for most of the 19 years Marketplace has been on the air. I've looked forward to his insights and good humor at the end of many a volatile week. He will certainly be missed.
From San Marcos, TX, 08/29/2008
Why is David Johnson leaving? Where is he going? When was this decided? My husband and I listen every Friday to Mr. Johnson despite our usually being in seperate cities. We call each other up and listen together. Please reconsider.
From Circle Pines, MN, 08/29/2008
I'm saddened.
Ever since I seriously started listening to public radio in 2004, I've looked forward to 6:30 on Fridays, to find out what David Johnson thought of the week in the Markets. His humorous insight will be missed.
From Providence, RI, 08/29/2008
I was shocked to hear that David Johnson will no longer be heard on Marketplace. For me, David is a significant aspect of Marketplace and someone I always look forward to hearing from. David's calm philosophical manner and excellent perspective provide necessary balance to the frequent bad news we hear on Marketplace (and to the cynicism we hear when there is good news!) Please, can you reconsider??
From MA, 08/29/2008
I know nothing about money or stocks or finance but I always loved listening to David Johnson. It is clear from the other comments that he will be missed. Why didnt Market Place give some details about where he was going and what he will be doing? How about some closure here guys?
From New Orleans, LA, 08/29/2008
Agree. David is a great commentator. Will miss him and hope his future is bright.

From West Chester, PA, 08/29/2008
I am so sad that David Johnson is leaving. I truly look forward to his insightful comments. Why does he have to go?
From FAIRFAX, VA, 08/29/2008
Say it ain't so David!
First Lou Rukeyser and all the great talent he uncovered. Now your commentary will be off the air. Best of luck in whatever comes next. I hope MARKETPLACE will find another insightful thoughtful and fun participant for my Friday night commute home.
From terre haute, IN, 08/29/2008
I will miss the common sense, straight forward discussions and banter every Friday. I did not see this coming. Is David just leaving for normal retirement, slowdown??

From Decatur, GA, 08/29/2008
Hello David Johnson: I am not sure I
heard it right. Did I hear this is your
last Friday night with Market Place?
Why? You have done such a wonderful
commnetary through these past many years. Why leave now, for Heaven's Sake? What will you be doing?
I will miss you. All the Best.

From Decatur, GA, 08/29/2008
This is the worst thing to happen to National Public Radio since Bob Edwards was sacked. David Johnson's enthusiasm, optimism, and pragmatism make for an always entertaining approach to business dynamics. I looked forward to his weekly sessions, and Marketplace will not be the same once he's gone. Can someone please lean on Mr. Johnson to come back from time to time as a periodic commentator? He has been a joy and delight and will be much missed. David Johnson is public radio.
From taylor, MI, 08/29/2008
sure going to miss you david johnson, i won't know if it's friday anymore....lol
From NC, 08/29/2008
Always enjoyed David Johnson's commentary and banter with Kai. You will be sorely missed. Thanks and good luck.
From Sinking Spring, PA, 08/29/2008
I'll really miss David Johnson's weekly appearance. Thanks for all those years of good advice and good humor.
